Dedicated Mobile App Design

Design Prompt: Design a mobile point of sale application for a local retailer that reduces the time it takes to retain customers.

My Role: UX/ UI Design

Problem Statement

Sales are lost as a result of long customer waits; locating product count, customer information, and processing sales transactions all require the associate walking behind the counter.

Target Audience: Store associates that often overwhelmed with customers during store peak hours. They need to help reduce the long lines while also tending to the sales floor.

Solution:

This newly designed POS app allows users to perform sales tasks, such as product lookup and checkout services without leaving the sales floor.

User Research & Ideation

A primary user group identified through research was sales associates who need to perform sales duties; engaging with customers without having to leave the sales floor.

This user group confirmed initial assumptions about Bare Minerals, but also revealed that upselling the customer was just as important as providing fast checkout services. Other challenges included having to remember all the deals of the day and knowing product on hand. Research methods:

  • User interviews

  • Persona

  • Empathy map

  • User journey

  • Usability studies

Usability Study - Thinking out loud method

"Im not sure which button to use first for product scanning"

"I would imagine the plus sign being closer to the enter SKU text"

"I need to see the coordinating items of this product prior to checking them out so I can upsell"

"This was pretty straight forward and would help check customers out on the sales floor"

Findings:

Research goals were to determine whether a mobile checkout service can help retain customers curing peak store hours. I conducted a usability study with 5 participants. Each participant was able to test the checkout process using the lo-fi prototype and talk me through their thoughts.

User Story

As an assistant manager of a local chain makeup store, Chris wants to keep a log of his VIP customers and their favorite beauty products so that he may contact them when they are back in stock or on sale.

There were issues with the time it takes to personally call a client to inform them on in-store product restock and promotional events.

My goals here was to design information architecture that allows the associate to setup push notifications to clients within the website. This would eliminate cold calling and reduce the time it takes to send a personal message.
